چکیده

The development of a holistic model to assess the long-term economic effects of trashing versus burning provides the foundations for assessing the potential profits from sales of trash to a mill. The costs of trash delivered under various circumstances are compared with the cost of coal of equivalent energy. Numerous factors influence the cost competitiveness of trash but it is evident that, in some circumstances, there is a win-win situation for millers and growers if millers buy trash instead of coal. In other circumstances the agronomic value of the trash may be greater than its value as a fuel. Developments in energy technologies are likely to expand the opportunities for profitable trash sales, making it important to have a decisionsupport model for assessing long-term effects and profits. This paper presents one such model and gives perspectives on opportunities for future sales of trash.

Factors Affecting the Economics of Trashing

The trashing versus burning debate has been raging for many years, where trashing is defined as the physical separation of leaf material from the cane ‘stick’ prior to transporting the cane stick to the mill. This paper steers away from the environmental debate and focuses on the economics of trashing versus burning. Trashed cane can generally be supplied quicker than burnt cane, reducing sucro...

The Effects of Cane Trash on Yield and Nutrition from the Long-term Field Trial at Mount Edgecombe

This paper reports on the yield and nutritional trends over 61 years as affected by various treatments (trashed, burnt with tops either left or removed and all plots either fertilised or not fertilised) of the burning and trashing trial (BT1) at Mount Edgecombe. The overall mean residual yield benefit due to trashing was 9.3 tc/ha/an after 39 crops. The capacity of the Arcadia soil form (Vertis...

Optimum Irrigation Levels for Cane under Burnt and Trashed Conditions

Increasing irrigation levels from 37% to 84% of Class "A" Pan evaporation produced a linear increase in cane yield from 65 to 146 tonslha. The response with burnt cane was greater due to more severe moisture stress, and there was also an increase in cane yield between 84% and 100% Pan which was absent in trashed cane. Maximum sucrose content, as well as brix, purity and recoverable sugar % cane...

Long-term Effects of Green Cane Harvesting versus Burning on the Size and Diversity of the Soil Microbial Community

The long-term effects of green cane harvesting with trash retention, compared with burning, on soil microbiological properties were evaluated using data from the long-term trash management trial at Mount Edgecombe (BT1). Total organic C content was greater under green cane harvesting than burning in the surface 0-10 cm layer of soil. Microbial biomass C was greater under green cane harvesting t...
